MARKET UPDATE - EMERGENCY FUEL SURCHARGES ON LCL SHIPMENTS AND AIRFREIGHT NOW AFFECTED
We would like to advise that we are now receiving consistent notifications from multiple international carriers and co-loaders confirming the implementation of Emergency Fuel Surcharges (EFS) across LCL (Less than Container Load) services, impacting both import and export cargo.
These surcharges are being introduced in response to ongoing volatility in global energy markets, driven by geopolitical developments and rising fuel costs and a reflection of the charges that the shipping lines have now implemented. This is now affecting not only ocean freight, but also inland transport, drayage, and consolidation services across global supply chains.
What this means for your shipments:
-
Emergency Fuel Surcharges are now being applied across all FCL & LCL trade lanes globally
-
Applicable to both imports into Australia and exports from Australia
-
Charges are being applied across both ocean and intermodal (inland) components
-
Surcharges are typically applied on a W/M basis (with minimum charges applicable) and are currently ranging approximately between USD $6 – $20, depending on routing, service structure, and inland requirements
-
Implementation is already underway, with some services effective immediately and others being introduced progressively this week
-
Charges remain subject to change at short notice in line with fuel market movements
For certain services routed via gateway ports or involving inland transport legs, surcharge levels may vary depending on the final routing and consolidation structure.
As with all carrier-imposed surcharges, TCF will apply these on a strict pass-through basis only, in line with supplier invoicing.
Given the current environment, we expect:
-
Continued volatility and potential adjustments (up or down)
-
Possible additional cost recovery measures should fuel conditions persist
Our team is actively monitoring developments and will continue to keep you informed of any material changes.
Should you require shipment-specific guidance or updated pricing, please contact your TCF representative.
We appreciate your continued support and understanding during this period.
